Project Overview
WHAT IS DIABETES MELLITUS?

Diabetes mellitus (both Type 1 and Type 2) is a chronic condition characterised by metabolic disorders such as chronic hyperglycaemia due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes mellitus represents one of the main independent cardiovascular risk factors, as it promotes the development and progression of atherosclerotic disease and other cardiometabolic conditions.

Cardiovascular risk in adults with diabetes is significantly higher than in the general population: 1 to 3 times higher in men and 2 to 5 times higher in women.

Even with good glycaemic control, the risk remains high due to factors such as glycaemic variability and lipoprotein abnormalities. An early diagnosis is often correlated with a lower future risk.

It is closely linked to coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure and peripheral circulatory problems. On average, cardiovascular complications appear about 15 years earlier than in those not affected by diabetes.

The development of these complications is due to a mix of factors: obesity, physical inactivity, lifestyle, heredity and age, as well as biological mechanisms such as hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) that directly damages blood vessels and promotes atherosclerosis. To these are added insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia (alteration of blood fats), which fuel inflammation and damage to cardiac and vascular tissues. The goal of INsu-LINE is precisely to intervene on these mechanisms through technology, making it possible to personalise treatments and prevent damage before it becomes critical.
