University of Naples Federico II
The third largest university in Italy, with over eight centuries of history, representing today an international centre of excellence for research and higher education. The Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery (DMCC) aims to develop and carry out teaching and research activities in the fields of medical and surgical sciences. The DMCC hosts a Doctorate in Advanced Biomedical and Surgical Therapies and several research centres, some in collaboration with other departments, schools and universities.
DMCC’s research areas range from the genetic, nutritional, and metabolic bases of cardiovascular disease and mineral metabolism to experimental surgery, hemostasis and thrombohemorrhagic risk, endocrine metabolism, physiology and pathophysiology, gastroenterology and hepatology, immunopathology, brain aging and dementia, chronic diseases with a high social impact, infectious diseases, clinical nutrition, and oncology-hematology.
The university departments of the School of Medicine and Surgery at Federico II University are integrated and interdependent with the Federico II University Hospital, which is part of the Campania Regional Health Service.
UNINA has significant experience in co-designing and testing IT solutions for the self-management of chronic conditions and health promotion, resulting from participation in research and innovation projects and innovative procurement initiatives (VR2CARE, Multiplat_Age, INCAREHEART, HSMONITOR, and others).

Prof. Guido Iaccarino
Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the Federico II University of Naples. He directs the educational and clinical programme for the prescription of adapted physical activity for patients with chronic conditions at the Federico II University Hospital. He has conducted international research in the United States at Duke University, working with Nobel Prize winner Robert Lefkowitz. He is the author of over 200 international scientific publications and has contributed significantly to the study of the molecular mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy, beta-adrenergic signalling and cardiovascular dysfunction. He also holds management positions in scientific societies in the field of hypertension and cardiovascular research.
Prof. Maddalena Illario
Associate Professor at the Department of Public Health at the Federico II University of Naples. She also serves as Coordinator of the “Innovative approaches to lifestyles and integrated care for chronic diseases” Unit at the Federico II University Hospital. She holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathology and has conducted international research at the Duke University Medical Center in the United States. Her scientific activity focuses mainly on public health, digital innovation in healthcare, healthy ageing, prevention of frailty and transformation of healthcare systems. She holds leadership roles at a European level, serving as Chair of the European Reference Sites Collaborative Network, a network involving 65 regions. She is involved in numerous European and international projects dedicated to digital health, active ageing and the sustainability of healthcare systems, and is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Nicola Tecce
Researcher at the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery at the Federico II University of Naples, where he carries out clinical, teaching and research activities in the field of endocrinology, diabetology and metabolic diseases. He is a specialist physician in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases and holds a Doctorate in Clinical and Experimental Medicine from the same university. His scientific activity focuses mainly on clinical research in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, therapeutic innovation and the use of advanced technologies in the management of endocrine and metabolic conditions. He collaborates with national and international research groups in the development of integrated strategies for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases.
Vincenzo De Luca
Researcher at the Department of Public Health at the Federico II University of Naples, where he conducts research oriented towards the study of the determinants of frailty in the older adults and digital innovation in the health and social care sectors. He holds a PhD in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the same university. From 2015 to 2025, he worked at the Research and Development Unit of the Federico II University Hospital, where he contributed to applied research in digital health and the coordination of the Campania Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA). During this experience, he worked on the management of several research projects and innovative public procurement initiatives on the adoption of innovative digital solutions for health and care. He is a project manager at the European Reference Site Collaborative Network.
Sara Aprano
Nutritionist Biologist affiliated with the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery at the University of Naples Federico II, where she conducts research in the field of clinical nutrition, endocrinology, obesity and digital health. She collaborates with the Italian Centre for the Care and Wellbeing of Patients with Obesity (C.I.B.O.) and with multidisciplinary groups engaged in the study of metabolic diseases and innovative strategies for the prevention and management of chronic conditions.
Jacopo Meglio
Nutritionist Biologist and PhD student in Public Health at the Department of Public Health at the Federico II University of Naples, where he conducts research in the field of data analysis applied to clinical nutrition and digital health. His scientific activity focuses on the use of quantitative methodologies and computational tools for the study of dietary habits and the evaluation of innovative nutritional interventions supported by digital technologies.
Serena De Simone
Professional Journalist and expert in Health Communication, affiliated with the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery at the Federico II University of Naples. She holds a degree in Law with a Master’s in Journalism and a specialisation in Health Communication from the University of Pavia. An expert in the management of scientific and medical information, she coordinates communication flows between university departments and external stakeholders.

For over twenty years, Meteda, an IQVIA company, has been involved in the design, production and marketing of digital systems and software in the field of diabetes. The company is engaged in the development of an Electronic Health Record, now used in 90 percent of national diabetology centres, and of a leading professional software in the field of dietary composition.
